Backyard EcoNest Building Intensive (BEN) (10 -12 days)
Overview
The BEN Builder Intensive tentative schedule includes 5 days of timber frame workshop at our EcoNest Headquarters in Ashland, Oregon, 1 day of travel, and 5 days of assembly on site.
Week 1: The Meditative Craft of Timber Framing (5 days) held in Ashland, Oregon
Week 2: BEN Assembly: Timber frame, Wall and Roof Construction and Assembly on site at Fort Bragg, CA.
The Meditative Craft of Timber Framing is part of the BEN Intensive workshop. Registration priority is given to students wishing to take the full 12-day Intensive. If the workshop hasn’t been filled two weeks prior to the start date, we will open registration for the Meditative Craft of Timber Framing.

The cost for the EcoNest Intensive workshop is $1875.
Upon registration you will receive a detailed registration package including required tools and
specifics about the location such as available accommodations, climate etc. Depending on what
you own, you can plan to spend $300-$400 on tools.

Phase I - Timber Frame Workshop and Prefab Walls in Ashland, Oregon
Timber Framing
Timber selection - correct orientation, maximizing strength and beauty
Shop drawings - EcoNest timber frame grid system and joinery details
Layout - precise application of the square rule system
Tapping - handcraft mortise and tenon joints with hand and power tools
Sharpening - sharpen your mind and your chisels & planes
Assembly - carefully fit and peg joints into bents and walls
Raising - erect and tune a timber frame until it sings!
Prefabricated Walls
A simple modular infill panel system for efficient wall building
Benefits of wood fiber panels
How to finish panels
How to install electrical/IT
Phase II - Timber Frame Erection, Wall and Roof Installation on Workshop Sponsors Site (within 500 miles of Ashland, OR) Special Note: This training takes place in two locations with Day 6 of the training for travelling.

Crafting & installing timber rafters and ridge beam
Applying tongue & groove ceiling boards
Weathering-in the roof
Finishing a Backyard Nest
Although we will not be doing the finish work we will have discussions for the following:
Foundations
Floor framing and finishing
Plumbing and electrical
Plastering walls
Roof; insulation, ventilation, decking, underlayment, metal roofing installation
